St. Louis, Mo., May/June 2003 — Though the labor unions have agreed to concession plans and new CEO, Gerard J. Arpey, is in place, the future of American Airlines still remains uncertain. Besides American Airlines' looming financial issues, the company may have continuing labor problems. Neil N. Bernstein, professor of law at Washington University in St. Louis and an expert in labor law, is available to comment.
"American Airlines has emerged from its recent series of labor negotiations with an untested chief executive and a bitter, resentful work force that is being asked to work harder for less money," Bernstein says.
"This changed relationship may be a greater threat to the continued viability of the company than its present financial difficulties".
