It wasn't the economy, health care, or the No Child Left Behind Act that drew her to the presidential debate. Rather, it was the special opportunity to use her artistic training and help design some of the memorabilia — pins, tote bags, and tee shirts — which could be seen all around campus in the weeks leading up to the debate.
"It was very fulfilling knowing that my designs were a reflection of something greater, something that is important and meaningful to many people. I was glad that I was able to contribute to the debate, while doing something I enjoyed," says Batts.
In the end, being able to work on the debate sparked Batts's interest in politics. "To have the presidential debate here at Washington University is so very important. It makes me want to get more interested in it. Most people realize it's a monumental event."
