Expertise: Epidemiology, veterans health, Gulf War, Vietnam, veterans, military
Bio: Eisen, who also is a physician at the St. Louis Veteran's Administration Hospital, led a large study that compared the health of veterans deployed in the first Gulf War to that of veterans deployed elsewhere. Ten years after the end of the first Gulf War, that study found most Gulf War veterans were as healthy as other veterans. However, the study also found that a small percentage of Gulf War veterans are more likely to have chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia syndrome.
Eisen also has studied the effects of genetic and environmental factors on psychiatric disorders, drug abuse and addiction in veterans.
He and a colleague also have conducted extensive long-term health assessments on a cohort of Vietnam veterans.
