John Haley is one of the nation's outstanding international and comparative law scholars and is widely credited with having popularized Japanese legal studies. His numerous scholarly works span issues ranging from international trade policy and comparative law to Japanese land-use law, Japanese and East Asian business transactions and Japanese law and contemporary society. He has taught and lectured internationally including Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan and Kobe University in Kobe, Japan. The author or editor of nine books and monographs, Haley's book Authority Without Power: Law and the Japanese Paradox and his article on "The Myth of the Reluctant Litigant" are considered leading works in the field. His most recent book is Antitrust in Germany and Japan: The First Fifty Years, 1947-1998.

Judgment at Nuremberg 60 Years Later

Sept. 22, 2006 -- The Nuremberg trials of major Nazi war criminals spawned the idea of international human rights, but have the principles endured? Leading scholars from Washington University in St. Louis will join former Nuremberg prosecutors and distinguished experts on international criminal justice to examine the legacy of the war trials and their impact on international law, the judicial system and world peace. The conference, "Judgment at Nuremberg," marks the 60th anniversary of the Nuremberg trials and will take place Sept. 29-Oct. 1 on the Washington University campus.

Nov. 4, 2003 -- The Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, the Whitney R. Harris Institute for Global Legal Studies and the Department of Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis will present the conference, "Globalization, the State, and Society," Nov. 13-14 in the Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom of Anheuser Busch Hall. This event, which is free and open to the public, is planned as part of the University's Sesquicentennial celebration.
