Wiltenburg has served as dean of University College (and an associate dean in Arts & Sciences) since 1996. While serving as dean, the University has seen substantial growth in several programs he oversees, including University College undergraduate classes, high school summer scholars, Lifelong Learning Institute and several others. University College, founded in 1931, serves the educational needs and interests of adult residents in the St. Louis area. He has received the Missouri Governors Award for Teaching Excellence, and continues to regularly teach literature from Shakespeare to Milton, as well as humanities for first-year medical school students.

Harvard, for less: Extension courses' new allure

Nov. 18, 2005 -- Story on the growing number of students attending extension and continuing education programs -- especially at prestigious universities such as Harvard. These programs have long served midcareer adults and people with some previous college credit. But schools that accept younger students say interest is increasing, driven largely by economic considerations. WUSTL University College Dean Robert Wiltenburg comments.



Additional Background: Wiltenburg has penned books on Ben Jonson and teaching composition, as well as articles on Shakespeare, Milton, Donne, Marvell, and others. He has received the Missouri Governors Award for Teaching Excellence, and continues to regularly teach literature from Shakespeare to Milton, as well as humanities for first-year medical school students. Wiltenburg is a former director of expository writing and of the summer school, and has served as dean of University College (and an associate dean in Arts & Sciences) since 1996.
