Arlene Stiffman has focused her academic career on critical issues in child and adolescent mental health, high-risk behaviors, and services. As associate director of the Center for Mental Health Services Research (CMHSR), she has been instrumental in creating and developing the research and training foundation essential to support more effective mental health services in the United States.

Traditional healers are legitimate resources for youth in American Indian communities, says mental health expert

Sept. 8, 2006 -- According to numerous studies, American Indian youth experience disproportionate rates of mental health and behavioral problems, including substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and suicidal thoughts. To address this critical problem, an adolescent mental health expert at Washington University in St. Louis says that traditional healers in American Indian communities may be a valuable but under-recognized resource offering alternative and culturally relevant services that complement conventional medical treatment. Additional Background: Stiffman currently has four research projects: 1) mental problems and service needs of teenagers in St. Louis City, 2) the function of specialty and non-specialty mental health providers, 3) increasing life options for teens in foster care, and 4) African-American males in the juvenile justice system. Professor Stiffman has a long-established relationship with the Washington University School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry with whose faculty she has collaborated on several research projects and publications.

Several journals have published her work: Journal of Social Service Research, Journal of Child and Family Studies, Adolescence, American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, Child Abuse and Neglect, and Journal of Adolescent Health. She is the co-editor of six books, including Ethical Issues in Adolescent Mental Health and Advances in Adolescent Mental Health: Contraception, Pregnancy, and Parenting, Volume IV.

Professor Stiffman has been an active member of the St. Louis community, including her service on various boards and committees of the Jewish Federation. She directed evaluations for Matthews Dickey Boys Club, Edgewood Family Preservation, Youth in Need, and the Metropolitan Youth Academy.

She teaches courses on working with adolescents.
