Thomas Schweich served the Bush administration as the ambassador for counternarcotics and justice reform in Afghanistan, as the government's principal deputy assistant secretary (PDAS) for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) and chief of staff to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. He is currently a special representative for Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
As the PDAS, Schweich helped manage an annual budget of $2.5 billion and more than 4,000 people around the world. INL is responsible for international drug interdiction and eradication; police, judge and prosecutor training; combating cyber-crime, money laundering and international organized crime syndicates; and negotiating international crime conventions, among other activities.
In 1999 and 2000, Schweich served the Justice Department as chief of staff of the Danforth special counsel investigation into the deaths of the Branch Davidians at Waco Texas. He has published three books and several articles on law, personal finance, careers, numismatics, economic history, and international affairs. He has also enjoyed a more than two decade affiliation with the law firm Bryan Cave LLP, where his practice focuses on commercial litigation, government contracts, and white collar criminal defense.
