Assistant Professor of Social Work
Expertise: international social development, capacity building and participatory development, institutional change, political economy, ethnographic research
Bio: Carolyn Lesorogol's main interests are in international social development and the dynamics of social change processes. She has studied these issues among African pastoralists in Kenya where she has conducted long term fieldwork examining the political and economic processes resulting in privatization of communal land. Combining ethnographic approaches with quantitative and experimental methods, this work investigates the impetus for social change, the trajectory of social conflict that resulted in privatization, and the outcomes of private land ownership for economic well-being and social relations. Lesorogol has also worked extensively with rural communities in Kenya designing and implementing participatory development programs that build community capacities to identify, implement and evaluate initiatives to enhance quality of life and strengthen opportunities for social and economic development.
