Creative Achievement Award Peter MacKeith receives national ACSA teaching honors April 1, 2008 -- Peter MacKeith Download Peter MacKeith, associate dean of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts and associate professor of architecture, has received one of three national Creative Achievement Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). MacKeith received the award for the design studio "Lighthouses: Adventures on the Mississippi," which he led in the spring of 2007.

Over the last century, corporate headquarters — as well as churches, universities and government institutions — have been pillars of the urban environment, embodying the culture, values and aspirations of their societies. Yet today's corporations — competing in global, open-market economies; distanced and disassociated from the means of production — have increasingly situated themselves on the suburban periphery, replacing civic engagement with simple displays of technological prowess. As a result, "corporations must be seen as potential 'dissolving agents' of the cities in which they have chosen to locate," argues Peter MacKeith, associate director of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, where he also serves as associate dean of Architecture.

MacKeith named associate director Peter MacKeith named associate director of Sam Fox Arts Center Aug. 24, 2004 -- MacKeith Download Peter MacKeith has been appointed associate director of the Sam Fox Arts Center at Washington University in St. Louis. MacKeith, who also serves as associate dean for the School of Architecture, will be responsible for public programming; collaborative teaching and research; and organization of the planned Whitaker Foundation Learning Lab.

Download Earth Day may arrive each April, but for architecture students and faculty, environmental design is increasingly part of the year-round curriculum. At the same time, a growing number of American universities are challenging themselves to implement green principles on their own campuses. From ivy-covered walls and tree-lined walkways, new ideals are taking shape: highly efficient buildings — constructed of local, sustainable materials — that reduce waste and minimize strain on local infrastructures; a holistic approach that considers operational as well as construction costs; and entire universities that might someday achieve net zero environmental impact.

MacKeith has worked as a design architect in both the United States and Finland. Projects include the House Siltavuori Exhibition at the 1991 Venice Biennale (with Juhani Pallasmaa Architects, Helsinki) and the Klockner Soccer Stadium, University of Virginia, Charlottesville (with VDMO Architects, Charlottesville), which won a Virginia AIA Award in 1993.

MacKeith directed the international Masters Program in architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology from 1994 to 1999 and previously taught in design and architectural theory at Yale University and the University of Virginia. In 1998, he was Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.

MacKeith holds bachelor degrees in literature and international relations from the University of Virginia and a Masters of Architecture from Yale University.
