Stone is an economic and ecological anthropologist whose primary focus is on African agrarian systems. She is interested in agricultural labor and its organization within households and within communities, with a special focus on the sexual division of labor. She has done field research in Nigeria, Senegal and Mauritania. She is also interested in the effects of globalization on local economies. She most recently co-edited a book on the topic of commodities and globalization as seen from an anthropological prerspective.

Adam Hochschild discusses Congo holocaust for Assembly Series

King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror and Heroism in Colonial Africa, sheds light on a little known tragedy of immense scale

Oct. 27, 2003 -- Author Adam Hochschild will deliver the annual Holocaust Memorial lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. The lecture, entitled "The Holocaust in the Congo - Then and Today," is free and open to the public. It will be held in Graham Chapel, located just north of Mallinckrodt Center (6445 Forsyth Blvd.) on the Washington University campus.Hochschild's talk will be based on his acclaimed book, King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror and Heroism in Colonial Africa (1998).
