March dance madness Students take top honors at ACDFA regional conference April 7, 2008 -- David Marchant PAD students in Cecil Slaughter's "Grid" Download A group of 18 students dancers from the Performing Arts Department in Arts & Sciences has taken top honors at the Central Region conference of the American College Dance Festival Association. The conference was held March 4 to 9 at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. The students were recognized for their performance of "Grid," an original work choreographed by Cecil Slaughter, senior lecturer in dance.

rEvolutions Washington University Dance Theatre to feature original works Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 Nov. 16, 2007 -- David Kilper/WUSTL Photo Services Tensile Involvement by Alwin Nikolais Download Washington University Dance Theatre, the annual showcase of professionally choreographed works performed by student dancers, will present rEvolutions, its 2007 concert, Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 in Edison Theatre. rEvolutions will feature more than 50 dancers, selected by audition, performing seven works by faculty and guest choreographers. These include original pieces by visiting dancers Diadié Bathily and Paula Weber, as well as a new setting of Alwin Nikolais' classic Tensile Involvement (1953).

During his career with Dayton Dance, Slaughter performed extensively throughout the United States and as part of international tours to Seoul, South Korea, Moscow, France, and Germany. The company has also been featured annually at such prestigious dance festivals as Jacob's Pillow in Lee, MA. and the American Dance Festival at Duke University in Durham, NC. Slaughter frequently served as a featured artist dancing the role of the "Junkie" in Eleo Pomare's Blues for the Jungle, the role of "lil Lou" in Donald McKayle's District Storyville and a soloist in McKayle's Rainbow Round My Shoulder. Theatre credits include Mahalia's Song, Black Nativity, Aida, and Applause.

As a choreographer, Slaughter has set contemporary works for the Dayon Contemporary Dance Company in collaboration with the Grammy Award-winning a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock, as well as for the University of Iowa, Washington University, University of Dayton, Dance Theater of Dayton, Opus II, Ballet West Virginia, Black Genesis Dance Company, and Gateway Dance Theater. He has also choreographed several theatrical productions of plays and musicals.

Several of Slaughter's works have been recognized for choreographic achievement. These works include Spirituals, which was performed at the Kennedy Center for the Arts in Washington, D.C., as part of the American College Dance Festival Association's national dance showcase in 1998. Surrender was selected by the Washington University faculty to be adjudicated in the ACDFA regional festival in March 2000. Other honors include two works selected for the Ohio Emerging Choreographers Showcase, 1992-93.
