Larsen conducts research on emotion, primarily in terms of differences between people. Topics studied include mood variability, jealousy, attraction, depression, and strategies for the self-management of self-esteem and emotion. Methods of investigation have included psychophysiological techniques and experience sampling methods in addition to standard research methods. Other interests in circadian, and longer, rhythms in mood and social behavior have lead to a related interest in applied time-series statistics and the study of change over time.

WUSTL's Randy Larsen offers tips on beating holiday stress
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Dec. 15, 2004 -- When the holidays aren't as happy as they're supposed to be, counselors call the mental state - unofficially - the holiday blues. The generic moniker doesn't describe a clinical condition, but one that's all too common. Randy Larsen, head of the Department of Psychology at Washington University, prefers to frame the malady as holiday stress rather than blues. "The people who get in trouble around the holidays are people who do too much, expecting too much of themselves and others," he said.
