William J. Paul

Professor of Performing Arts in Arts & Sciences

Expertise: film, comedy, Ernst Lubitsch, comedy and horror, movie theatre architecture, "grossout" comedy

Bio: Paul has written widely on comedy and film. He is the author of Ernst Lubitsch's Americans American Comedy, an examination of the famous German emigre director's Hollywood comedies, and Laughing Screaming: Modern Hollywood Horror & Comedy, a cultural history that looks at the rise of "grossout" comedy and horror in the 1970s-80s. He is currently working on Movies/Theaters: Architecture, Exhibition, and Film Technology, which traces the various and changing ways in which people have viewed movies over their 100-plus year history.
