Bio:
Hamilton has directed the Hatchery™ Entrepreneurship Program at the Olin School of Business. Before joining Olin, he was an assistant professor of economics at McGill University for five years. In addition to being an expert on entrepreneurship, he also expertise in the economics of health and aging, specifically the efficacy of HIV treatment, hospital M&As. and advanced infertility treatment.

New healthcare management major offered at Olin Business School

2008 -- The Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis now offers a major in healthcare management. Professors from both the medical and business schools will teach courses to both business and non-business majors. The degree will help develop a strong grounding in all aspects of the healthcare industry as well as in the science behind medicine.

Surgeons within the same hospital generate widely different costs

Two surgeons at the same hospital perform the same operations on patients with similar medical histories. Their costs to the hospital are similar, right? Not necessarily. There could be a difference as high as 45 percent. State mandated insurance coverage and market competition have similar impact on making in vitro fertilization affordable

In vitro fertilization can cost anywhere from $10,000 - $15,000 for each round of treatments. This means access to assisted reproductive technologies (ART) is generally limited to a relatively small portion of couples that seek it. Several state governments have turned to public policy in an attempt to make access to ART more widely available. But two professors from the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis find that market competition can be as effective at expanding access as requiring insurance companies to cover infertility treatments. At the same time, competition appears to lower the rate of high-risk births and encourages the use of new technologies.

New Olin professorship
Bellwether Foundation establishes professorship in entrepreneurship; will be named in honor of Robert Brookings Smith

Major gifts from The Bellwether Foundation and from Nancy Morrill Smith will create the Robert Brookings Smith Distinguished Professorship in Entrepreneurship for Washington University's John M. Olin School of Business, it was announced by Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. Barton H. Hamilton, Ph.D., professor of economics, management and entrepreneurship in the John M. Olin School of Business, will be appointed as the first holder in a ceremony planned for later this year.
