PSA test plus digital exam best at spotting prostate cancer ABC News online and 4 others March 25, 2005 -- A combination of both the blood PSA test and the digital rectal exam appears to work best for detecting prostate cancer, according to early results from an ongoing study by WUSTL researchers led by Gerald Andriole. Prostate drug might cut cancer risk Reuters (UK) and 1 others Oct. 18, 2004 -- School of Medicine urologist Gerald Andriole comments on a new drug used to treat an enlarged prostate that apparently also offers men a reduced risk for developing prostate cancer. Additional Background: An expert on detection and treatment of prostate cancer, Andriole was instrumental in demonstrating the safety of a procedure called hemodilution, which permits radical prostatectomy patients to avoid blood transfusions by donating several units of their own blood minutes before surgery. The blood is then returned at the end of surgery. He is the national principal investigator on several multi-center trials investigating a variety of prostate treatments, including a comparison of herbal versus pharmaceutical treatment and an examination of minimally invasive approaches for detecting prostate cancer. In addition, he leads the St. Louis portion of a National Cancer Institute study known as the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial (PLCO). This large-scale study will determine whether widespread use of certain cancer-screening tests can save lives.
