Bio:
Since being appointed dean in 1999, Pike has overseen significant expansion of the School of Art's initiatives in digital media, which are rapidly becoming integrated into all curriculum areas, as well as a major renovation of facilities in Bixby Hall. The school's Carolyn Roehm Electronic Media Center has emerged as a campus-wide resource for animation, web design, motion graphics, three-dimensional modeling, multi-media design and other new technologies, while the Visual Communications Area has pioneered a nationally unique program with Apple to design and build custom computers that are required for all visual communications majors.

 Jeff Pike named first Jane Reuter Hitzeman and Herbert F. Hitzeman, Jr., Professor of Art

Jeff Pike, dean of the College of Art and the Graduate School of Art, has been named the first Jane Reuter Hitzeman and Herbert F. Hitzeman, Jr., Professor of Art in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, according to dean Carmon Colangelo, the E. Desmond Lee Professor for Community Collaboration in the Arts. The professorship was made possible by a gift from Jane Reuter Hitzeman and Herbert F. Hitzeman, Jr., both of whom hold degrees in art from Washington University. A formal installation ceremony took place Feb. 27.

Visual arts play important role in business
 Survey reveals perceptions and insights to help forge common ground between business and art cultures

The perception is that art and business speak different languages, inhabit different worlds, and "orbit different suns," says Jeff Pike, Dean of the School of Art at Washington University in St. Louis. But in reality, the visual arts play an active role in business culture, he says. The Washington University School of Art surveyed how artists and businesspeople view each other and came up with some important insights.

Additional Background: Pike can speak knowledgably to the value and increased demands for interdisciplinary study opportunities — almost one-third of art students currently pursue combined studies with another university division — and to the substantial economic impact of the arts through advertising, marketing, package design, web design and other fields.
Pike is a member of the executive committee for Washington University's proposed Sam Fox Arts Center, currently is being designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki. When completed, the center will link five campus areas — the School of Art, School of Architecture, Gallery of Art, Department of Art History and Archaeology in Arts & Sciences and Art and Architecture Library — through new and renovated facilities as well as shared programming and curriculum.
A professional illustrator and designer for over 20 years, Pike has worked with major advertising agencies and clients including: D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, The Glennon Companies, Brado Cuneo, Monsanto, Anheuser-Busch, Ralston Purina, and SSM Health Care-Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital. His work has been recognized in Print, Art Direction, Creativity, and Adweek magazines. He has also won Addy's and Flair awards for his creative work in advertising. His illustrations have received awards from the Chicago Society of Illustrators, and the University and College Designers Association.
From 1993-1996, Pike worked as a consultant for Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages where he, along with colleague Sarah Spurr, developed and implemented an evaluation for their artists and designers. The evaluation measured employees' creative knowledge, skills, and abilities, and required the approval of both union and management representatives. He is currently involved in a collaborative book project with an author and a playwright. The project, scheduled for completion in 2003, is a contemporary set of verbal and visual fictions based upon the letters of Abelard and Heloise.
Pike joined the faculty of the School of Art in 1983. During his tenure at the School, he began and directed the Illustration program, and in 1993 he was appointed Associate Dean, responsible for the undergraduate program. In addition, he has lectured at Maryland Institute, College of Art; North Carolina School of the Arts; University of Houston; Rhode Island School of Design; the University of Iowa; and Purdue University. He has been a resident at the Cité International des Arts, Paris, and a panel member on several art organizations, most recently at the National Association of Schools of Art and Design national conference.
