William Lowry studies American politics, public policy and political institutions with a special emphasis on natural resources, public lands and related environmental policiy issues. In recent years, Congressional Quarterly has called upon Lowry to write an updated chapter for the annual CQ Press book on environmental policy; his most recent chapter is titled: "A New Era in Natural Resource Policies?" ( 2003, Environmental Policy. 5th ed. Washington D.C.: CQ Press, 325-345). Lowry also is the author of several books and numerous articles on environmental policy issues, including Dam Politics: Restoring America's Rivers (2003: Georgetown University Press); Preserving Public Lands for the Future: The Politics of Intergenerational Goods (1998, Georgetown University Press); The Capacity for Wonder: Preserving National Parks (1994: The Brookings Institution); and The Dimensions of Federalism: State Governments and Pollution Control Policies (1992, Duke University Press).

Sustainable management of big rivers is topic of forum, April 22

"Our Rivers: A Sustainable Resource?" is the focus of a public education forum that four Washington University faculty will lead as part of a community-wide symposium being held in conjunction with the 5th annual St. Louis Earth Day Celebration, April 22-23. The sustainable rivers program will be held April 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature Washington University faculty Charles Buescher, professor of environmental engineering, Robert Criss, Ph.D., professor of earth and planetary sciences in Arts & Sciences and William Lowry, Ph.D., professor of political science in Arts & Sciences. The colloquium will provide a background history of the rivers in our region and their various uses in transportation, agriculture, power production, recreation and public water supply.
