Indian film star and social activist Shabana Azmi to give talk on 'Bollywood and Beyond'

Nov. 14, 2006 -- Internationally acclaimed actress and social activist Shabana Azmi, will give a talk at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 29, in Graham Chapel on the Washington University Danforth Campus. The lecture, "Bollywood and Beyond," will explore South Asia's socio-cultural climate. It is free and open to the public.

Azmi presents a unique perspective on South Asian social issues, filtered through a lens that fuses film and politics. A five-time recipient of the National Award for Best Actress, the Indian equivalent of Hollywood's Oscar, she was also a member of the Indian Parliament and served as Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations in 1988. For her work helping slum dwellers in Mumbai, she received the 2006 Gandhi Foundation International Peace Award.
