School of Social Work offers new full-tuition Richard A. Gephardt Public Service Scholarship

June 19, 2006 -- The George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis announces the new Richard A. Gephardt Public Service Scholarship.

This annual scholarship honors an outstanding graduate student in social work who aspires to a career that exemplifies the values, ideals, and leadership of Congressman Gephardt.

Recognizing the need for trained social work professionals who engage in public service roles and who promote civic inclusion, this two-year full-tuition award will help advance the education of individuals committed to making a difference through service with a focus on stimulating volunteerism and political engagement.

"I am honored that the mission of the Gephardt Institute for Public Service will be realized by the School of Social Work at Washington University, and that this scholarship will help to promote the legacy of public service at the School," Congressman Gephardt says.

The School of Social Work is the new home of the Gephardt Institute.

The scholarship recipient will have a mentoring relationship with Gephardt and will complete field work with appropriate local, national, or international organizations.

Amanda Moore McBride, Ph.D., director of the Gephardt Institute and assistant professor of social work, will serve as academic advisor.

"The partnership between the Gephardt Institute for Public Service and the School of Social Work is the first of its kind in the United States," McBride says.

"This scholarship emphasizes the social justice and service roots of social work, and creates unique training and professional opportunities for an outstanding social work student."
