WUSTL flag at half-staff in honor of A. Edward Nussbaum

Nov. 6, 2009 -- A. Edward Nussbaum, Ph.D., professor emeritus of mathematics in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. He was 84.

Nussbaum was a Holocaust survivor who escaped Nazi Germany at age 14. His parents and his brother died at Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland.

After a number of harrowing experiences, he eventually made it to Switzerland, where he studied mathematics for a time at the University of Zurich. In 1947, at 22, he took a ship to the United States. He enrolled in Brooklyn College and later earned a master's degree and a doctorate in mathematics at Columbia University.

He joined WUSTL's mathematics faculty as an assistant professor in 1958. He became a full professor in 1966 and taught until 1995, when he was named an emeritus professor.
