“During an election season, students tend to stand up and take action about things they care about. It’s exciting when students get involved in something they believe in, something that is a reflection of their morals and their values.”

Biography: “We want to involve as many students as possible in this process,” says senior Brittany Perez, president of Student Union, referring to the vice presidential debate and subsequent presidential election.

And she’s well on her way. Perez is working long hours to help disseminate funding for student debate-related projects and working to make sure students are registered to vote in the November election.

“During an election season, students tend to stand up and take action about things they care about,” Perez says. “It’s exciting when students get involved in something they believe in, something that is a reflection of their morals and their values.”

Perez has worked with the Gephardt Institute for Public Service to assemble a collaborative calendar of events throughout the semester, engaging students in civic responsibility and opportunities to participate and learn about politics and the elections.

“I think the vice presidential candidates might truly make or break the presidential election this year,” Perez says. “It’s going to bring a lot of visibility to the University. It’s exciting for students to be a part of it. We have more than 300 student volunteers who will be participating directly in debate preparation, which is invaluable experience.”
