Seth Carlin to present solo piano recital Nov. 17

Nov. 8, 2007 -- The Department of Music in Arts & Sciences will present two concerts in its newly opened 560 Music Center Nov. 17 and 19.

Noted pianist Seth Carlin, professor of music, will present a solo piano recital at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17. The program will feature Préludes, Book I (complete) by Claude Debussy; Piano Sonata, Op. 1 by Alban Berg; and Sonata, Op. 111 by Ludwig van Beethoven.

In addition, the Washington University Symphony Orchestra will present a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18. Dan Presgrave, instrumental music coordinator in the Department of Music in Arts & Sciences, will conduct the program, which includes the Rosamunde Overture by Franz Schubert; Variations symphoniques for Piano and Orchestra by César Franck; and Sinfonia da Requiem, Op. 20 by Benjamin Britten.

Carlin has performed with orchestras around the world and with conductors such as Nicholas McGegan, Leonard Slatkin and Roger Norrington. He has appeared in recital at major international festivals and with Pinchas Zukerman, Anner Bylsma and Malcolm Bilson, among others. In 1991-92 Carlin performed the complete Schubert fortepiano sonatas in New York City — concerts that were broadcast nationally on National Public Radio. More recently he appeared as soloist with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven's "Triple" Concerto as well as with San Francisco's Philharmonia Baroque, the period-instrument orchestra.

The Symphony Orchestra comprises more than 70 members, including about 50 string players. Members include both undergraduates and graduate students from across the university, ranging from architecture and business to various disciplines within Arts & Sciences.

Soloist for the Symphony Orchestra concert will be Charlotte Fong. A native of Taiwan, Fong holds a degree in piano performance from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and is currently in the master's program at Washington University, where she studies with Carlin. Fong began performing at age six and won numerous awards. In 2005 she won St. Louis' Sigma Alpha Iota Scholarship for Piano Performance and the following year took first place in the Southern Illinois Young Artist Competition.
