Washington University in St. Louis serves society through its programs of education, research, and service. The McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University in St. Louis is a unique educational program that prepares international graduate and professional students for future leadership roles. The McDonnell Academy attracts talented international students who are graduates of premier partner universities of the world to pursue their graduate or professional degrees at Washington University.
The McDonnell Academy affirms U.S. interest in attracting talented international students for advanced educational experiences, and provides a means for the United States to learn more about the rest of the world. To ensure the highest quality program, the Academy is focused and small, involving a limited number of Scholars and partner universities of the world. Scholars are selected on the basis of their promise to become future leaders in academia, government, the professions, or the corporate world. Academy programs provide academic, cultural, and social opportunities to encourage the Scholars' development as future leaders knowledgeable about the United States, other countries of the world, and critical international issues.
The McDonnell Academy nurtures the development of international cooperation in education and research among the partner universities and sponsoring corporations with the purpose of addressing global challenges and opportunities such as those related to environment and sustainability, international peace, food and energy production, human health, and economic and business prosperity. International collaboration in areas of intellectual and creative interest such as the arts, culture, and religion is also encouraged.
A special feature of the McDonnell Academy is that each Scholar has a mentor, who also serves as an Ambassador. The Ambassadors are appointed by Washington University to advise the Scholars and charged with strengthening collaboration with the partner universities. Collaborative efforts engage faculty and students of Washington University and those of the partner universities in a network of activities that enhance scholarly interests and international understanding.
