The McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University in St. Louis provides a select group of graduate and professional students with an extraordinary educational experience. The McDonnell Academy involves students from University Partners around the world.

Students admitted to the Academy will:

Scholars in the Academy contribute significantly to the research effort at Washington University and enhance the educational experiences of domestic students through sharing their culture, as well as the history and politics of their countries.

May 1, 2008 -- Six distinguished individuals, including a pioneer of women in medicine and a multimedia entrepreneur, will receive honorary degrees May 16 during Washington University's 147th Commencement ceremony. The university also will bestow academic degrees on more than 2,500 students during the ceremony, which begins at 8:30 a.m. in Brookings Quadrangle.

International university presidents declare energy research crucial

May 8, 2007 -- AP story on a three-day energy and environment conference at WUSTL, hosted by the McDonnell International Scholars Academy.
Thirteen university presidents from around the world urged government agencies and corporations to pour more resources into finding new sources of energy that don't harm the environment, calling it the most pressing problem facing the world today.

The McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University in St. Louis is a unique educational program that prepares international graduate and professional students for future leadership roles. The McDonnell Academy attracts talented international students who are graduates of premier partner universities of the world to pursue their graduate or professional degrees at Washington University.

The McDonnell Academy affirms U.S. interest in attracting talented international students for advanced educational experiences, and provides a means for the United States to learn more about the rest of the world. To ensure the highest quality program, the Academy is focused and small, involving a limited number of Scholars and partner universities of the world. Scholars are selected on the basis of their promise to become future leaders in academia, government, the professions, or the corporate world. Academy programs provide academic, cultural, and social opportunities to encourage the Scholars' development as future leaders knowledgeable about the United States, other countries of the world, and critical international issues.

The McDonnell Academy nurtures the development of international cooperation in education and research among the partner universities and sponsoring corporations with the purpose of addressing global challenges and opportunities such as those related to environment and sustainability, international peace, food and energy production, human health, and economic and business prosperity. International collaboration in areas of intellectual and creative interest such as the arts, culture, and religion is also encouraged.

A special feature of the McDonnell Academy is that each Scholar has a mentor, who also serves as an Ambassador. The Ambassadors are appointed by Washington University to advise the Scholars and charged with strengthening collaboration with the partner universities. Collaborative efforts engage faculty and students of Washington University and those of the partner universities in a network of activities that enhance scholarly interests and international understanding.
