The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts aspires to become a national model for the creation, study and exhibition of multidisciplinary and collaborative work. Offering rigorous art and architecture education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, the Sam Fox School links four academic units — the College of Art, College of Architecture, Graduate School of Art and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design — with the university's nationally recognized Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum.

July 17, 2006 — In 1960 a young Japanese architecture professor named Fumihiko Maki completed his first-ever commission while teaching at Washington University in St. Louis. Four decades later, Maki is among the world's premier architects, a Pritzker Prize-winner renowned for creating monumental spaces that fuse Eastern and Western sensibilities. Now Maki has returned to Washington University as architect of the new 68,000-square-foot Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, a dramatic, light-filled structure that will showcase the university's internationally renowned art collection; and Earl E. and Myrtle E. Walker Hall, a 38,000-square-foot studio facility.

| New dean of art Ronald Leax to lead College and Graduate School of Art (http://news-info.wustl.edu/news/page/normal/11752.html) May 15, 2008 -- Ronald Leax, the Halsey Cooley Ives Professor of Art, has been named dean of art, according to Carmon Colangelo, dean of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. Leax will lead the College of Art and the Graduate School of Art. The one-year appointment will begin July 1. Leax will succeed dean Jeff Pike, who is the Jane Reuter Hitzeman and Herbert F. Hitzeman, Jr., Professor in Art. Pike has served as dean of art since 1999. He will return to full-time teaching following a sabbatical year. |
| Design/build Architecture students develop two projects in New Orleans (http://news-info.wustl.edu/news/page/normal/11691.html) May 1, 2008 -- St. Thomas Seven Pepper Hot Sauce is one of the hottest pepper sauces in New Orleans, grown and bottled at God's Vineyard Community Garden, 918 Felicity St. Yet like much of the city, this nonprofit farm was severely affected by Hurricane Katrina. Over the last several months a group of St. Louis architecture students have collaborated with garden founders Earl Antwine and Noel Jones to reestablish God's Vineyard by designing, building and installing a new chicken coop. At the same time, the students also have been working with the Good Work Network on redevelopment plans for the Franz Building, located at 2016 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. The latter project was recently named a finalist in the 2008 JP Morgan Chase Community Development Competition. |
| ARCHITECT Magazine Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design ranked 5th in nation (http://news-info.wustl.edu/news/page/normal/10632.html) April 8, 2008 -- Washington University's Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design, part of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, has been ranked 5th in the nation by ARCHITECT Magazine. The survey, published in the magazine's November issue, examined all 117 programs recognized by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Washington University was tied with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg. It was ranked first in the Midwest. |

| Korean Comics: A Society through Small Frames at Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum
ArtDaily.org Aug. 10, 2007 -- Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in Japanese manga, or comic books, in the United States, yet Korean comics remain relatively unknown. This fall, the WUSTL's Kemper Art Museum will present Korean Comics: A Society through Small Frames, a rare U.S. exhibition of work from both North and South Korea. The exhibition provides a decade-by-decade glimpse of the evolving social realities in contemporary Korea, as depicted in comics ranging from popular children's entertainment to aggressive forms of political commentary. |
