Entrepreneurs changing lives
 Kiva microfinancer Jessica Jackley to deliver talk on entrepreneurship; kick off competitions

Sept. 4,
2009 -- Jessica Jackley, co-founder of Kiva, the Internet-driven microfinance organization that connects lenders with budding entrepreneurs, will deliver the Assembly Series/Skandalaris Lecture at 5 p.m. Thursday, September 17 in Simon Hall's May Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. This is the kickoff event for the Skandalaris Center's annual business plan competitions: the Olin Cup, and the YouthBridge Social Entrepreneur and Innovation Competition.

Future for aspiring non-profit entrepreneurs is bright in St. Louis
 Social enterprise competition gets renewed funding; changes name

2009 -- The Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition (SEIC) enters its fifth year with a new name in recognition of a St. Louis community foundation. The competition offers mentoring, business advice and workshops for social enterprise start-ups. Contestants in the seven month-long competition must pass several hurdles before investment awards, totaling thousands of dollars, are announced next spring for the most promising ventures.

 Five local ventures win seed money in competition

2009 -- The largest award pool for social entrepreneurship in the U.S. was split five ways on April 23, 2009 when winners of the Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition were announced at Washington University in St. Louis. The five finalists were chosen from an original field of 42 entrants and represent diverse ventures with missions to provide educational and cultural and vocational training.

Innovative Entrepreneurship Education Award Named
 Course combining western civ with history of entrepreneurs is honored

2009 -- Steven C. Hause, Ph.D., senior scholar in the Humanities at Washington University in St. Louis, has received the Innovative Entrepreneurship Education Course Award from the U.S. Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship for his course, "Economic History and Entrepreneurialism in Modern Western Civilization."

Entrepreneurship in the Current Economy
 Good times coming for entrepreneurs?

2009 -- Build-A-Bear Workshop founder and CEO, Maxine Clark, will respond to questions about entrepreneurship in today's economy at the 5 p.m. Assembly Series talk on Thursday, February 5 in Graham Chapel. The event is co-sponsored by the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and the Olin School of Business, as well as several organizations outside the University. Following the discussion at 6:15 p.m., Clark and Ken Harrington, the center's managing director, will present the Olin Cup and a cash prize to the winning student team.

Record-breaking number of teams compete for Olin Cup prize
 Entrepreneurship is thriving despite recession

2008 -- Entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in this year's Olin Cup competition with $70,000 in seed money at stake. A record-breaking 38 teams entered the annual business formation contest operated by the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. Five finalists are now in the final stage of the competition which concludes with business plan presentations in January; winners will be announced Feb. 5, 2009.

WUSTL alumnus sees green in housing market
 For passion and profit: Jay Swoboda on green entrepreneurship

2008 -- Jay Swoboda is an entrepreneur who is showing the St. Louis community that there is a burgeoning market for green, modern, precision-built homes in urban neighborhoods. Swoboda will talk about his experiences at 4 p.m. Wednesday, October 15, for an Assembly Series program called "Gonzo Entrepreneurship: Creating Better Social Environments while Keeping a Roof over your Head." The presentation will be held in the Danforth University Center Room 276 and is free and open to the public.

Four area non-profits garner prizes totaling $110,000
 WUSTL's Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition winners have an artistic bent

2008 -- On April 17, four local nonprofits were honored at the Awards Dinner for the 3rd annual Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition (SEIC). The winners are StudioSTL, LiveFeed, BEGIN and Indego Africa. The groups will receive a total of $110,000 in cash and in-kind support for successfully demonstrating that their ventures have social value and that their group has the ability to implement its plans.

 Two business startups collect $75,000 in seed funding at the 10th annual Olin Cup Competition

Release embargoed until 9 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008. Two student-owned business startups won the top honors at the Olin Cup Competition award ceremony Thursday, Feb. 7. The first place award of $50,000 went to Is That One Good? an internet web site where consumers can compare notes on goods and services. The second place, $25,000 prize went to MedExceed, a medical device company. The awards were announced at a ceremony on Feb. 7 at Washington University in St. Louis. Arnold W. Donald, former chairman of Merisant and current president and chief executive officer of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International was the keynote speaker.

Philanthropic startups vie for annual award
 Semi-finalists announced for the Social Entrepreneurship & Innovation Competition at WUSTL

2007 -- The Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at Washington University in St. Louis has announced the semi-finalists in the 2008 Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition. This year's semi-finalists represent a range of proposals including of a group of college students with a plan to provide counseling and mentoring services for low-income students, to an established nonprofit with a proposal for a mixed-use small business incubator.
