2009 -- Warren M. Shapleigh, former president of the Ralston Purina Co. and an emeritus trustee of Washington University in St. Louis, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at McKnight Extended Care. He was 89.

2009 -- Benjamin F. Edwards III, Washington University trustee emeritus and former chairman, chief executive officer and president of A.G. Edwards Inc., died Monday, April 20, 2009, from prostate cancer. He was 77.

2009 -- Phyllis C. Rogier, departmental accountant in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, of a heart attack at her home in St. Louis. She was 55.

 Jean Gaines, former director of commencement, dies at 86

2008 --
Genevieve L. 'Jean' Gaines, who served Washington University for more than 55 years in roles ranging from a secretary, to administrative assistant, to associate registrar and lastly, as director of commencement, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008. She was 86.

Flag at half-staff in honor of Donald Finkel
 Award-winning poet dies at 79

Nov. 17,
2008 -- Donald Finkel, poet-in-residence emeritus of English in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, of complications from Alzheimer's disease at the Schuetz Manor in St. Louis County. He was 79.
Finkel joined the Washington University community in 1960 with his wife, the late poet Constance Urdang. He was the author of more than a dozen books of poetry.
An obituary will appear in the Dec. 4 issue of the Record.

Lynne "Angel" Cooper Harvey
 Legendary news producer dies at 92

May 6,
2008 -- Legendary news producer Lynne "Angel" Cooper Harvey, wife of broadcaster Paul Harvey, died Saturday, May 3, at the couple's home in River Forest, Ill., following a long battle with leukemia. She was 92. Born and raised in St. Louis, Angel — as she was universally known — earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree in English from Washington University and worked at local radio station KXOK-AM, where she met Paul, her husband of 68 years.

2008 -- Richard J. Parvis, professor emeritus at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work and leader in the area of international social development, died Sunday, Feb. 24. He was 92. A memorial service is scheduled for April 26, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. in Brown Hall Lounge.
