WUSTL ponders its calling
 Universities' role in democracy examined in Saturday seminar series, Feb. 7-28

2009 -- What is the proper role of American higher education in shaping the values and ambitions of a free democratic society, and more specifically, what are Washington University's responsibilities as a citizen of the greater St. Louis community, the nation and the world? Getting the campus and surrounding community to reflect on these questions is the goal of the Master of Liberal Arts program's "Democracy and the University" seminar series.

2008 -- "Media will swarm campus" is the headline this week in the student newspaper at Washington University in St. Louis where Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Sarah Palin are scheduled to kick off their much-anticipated vice presidential debate at 8 p.m. (CDT) Oct. 2, in the University's Athletic Complex.

2008 -- Two of the presidential candidates' top economic advisors, Douglas Holtz-Eakin of the John McCain camp and Austan Dean Goolsbee of the Barack Obama camp, will square off in St. Louis for a spirited debate on the candidates' economic platforms beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 2, the day of the vice presidential debate on the nearby campus of Washington University in St. Louis.

C-SPAN's "Campaign 2008 Bus," a 45-foot long traveling television production studio that is used for political coverage and educational purposes, will be making stops in St. Louis Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 as Washington University in St. Louis hosts the Oct. 2 vice presidential debate between Republican Gov. Sarah Palin and Democrat Sen. Joe Biden.
