Washington University has a long and rich tradition of athletic achievement that first started well over 100 years ago. Since the mid-1970's the Bears have competed as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. Washington U. has been a member of the University Athletic Association (UAA) since the beginning of the 1987-88 season.

Throughout its athletic history, Washington University has continued to establish itself as both a leader and pioneer in the world of student-athletics.

Washington University became a founding member of the University Athletic Association in June 1986 when it joined eight other leading independent research universities to compete in intercollegiate athletics at the varsity level for men and women.

Football coach solicits words of wisdom from famous, successful people to motivate his team

Above is a selection of letters football coach Larry Kindbom has collected for his student-athletes since 1998 and self-published in his "Playbook of Champions."

Instead of getting his team fired up with movies or fire and brimstone, Larry Kindbom, football coach at Washington University in St. Louis, solicits motivational letters from successful people in all walks of life. He has received responses from people such as former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole, Vice President Al Gore, Southwest Airlines CEO Herb Kelleher, sportscaster Bob Costas and a host of other notables. This year, Kindbom's taken the responses and self-published a book, "Playbook of Champions," for his student-athletes. More...

Rededication of Francis Field today is moved inside

WUSTL will rededicate Francis Field, site of the 1904 Olympic track & field events, on June 16 at 5 p.m.

WUSTL will rededicate Francis Field, site of the 1904 Olympic track & field events, at 5 p.m. on June 16.
Washington University Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton will be joined by Charlie A. Dooley, St. Louis county executive; Jeff Rainford, chief of staff for St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay; John Schael, Washington University athletic director; Robert Marbut, chair of the U.S. Olympic Committee's National Governing Bodies' Council; and former Olympic athletes Craig Virgin and Wendy Williams for a 5 p.m. ceremony June 16 recognizing the 100th anniversary of the 1904 Olympics at WUSTL and the Athens 2004 Olympic Torch Relay. During the ceremony, which has been moved inside due to inclement weather, Wrighton will host a rededication of Francis Field, the site of the 1904 Olympic track and field events. The ceremony will be held in the Field House in WUSTL's Athletic Complex.

June 14, 2004 -- The Field House has a rich and storied past. It was the site of several NBA games and outstanding Missouri High School state championships, not to mention numerous Bears games with Illinois, Missouri, Princeton, Harvard, Purdue, Arkansas and others. The university has also been asked to host debates in 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 — an unprecedented record.

Feb. 27, 2008 -- WUSTL senior forward Troy Ruths heads the 2008 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America men's basketball teams. Ruths is the Academic All-American of the Year for the second straight year in the college division and carries a 4.0 grade-point average in computer science.

Wash U wins Rose-Hulman quad
NCAAsports.com

Jan. 26, 2005 -- WUSTL women's track and field team opened the 2005 season by winning the Rose-Hulman Quad in Terre Haute, Ind. The Bears women registered 128 points, just ahead of host Rose-Hulman Institute of the Technology. The WUSTL men placed third with 107 points, while Rose-Hulman won the meet with 164 points.
