Garden grows on South 40 House

New green roof at Washington University promotes sustainability, adds green space for students

An environmentally friendly "green roof" — containing grass, native plants and approximately 110,000 pounds of soil — opened last week at the South 40 House on Washington University in St. Louis' Danforth Campus. The new roof helps the university conserve energy and water and provides additional gathering space for students.


On the corner

Washington University's Corner Building at Delmar and Skinker opens

Aug. 27, 2009 -- Washington University in St. Louis' newly renovated Corner Building on Skinker and Delmar boulevards opened Aug. 14. The building is located on the eastern side of the Loop area in the City of St. Louis and contains apartments and spaces for retail shops.

Washington University's Village East apartments certified LEED Silver

Washington University in St. Louis' Village East student apartment building has received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. The Village East is the first LEED-certified residence hall and third LEED-certified building on the university's Danforth Campus.

Danforth University Center is LEED Gold certified

Feb. 5, 2009 --
The William H. and Elizabeth Gray Danforth University Center at Washington University in St. Louis has received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. The Danforth University Center is the first LEED Gold and second LEED-certified building on the university's Danforth Campus. Among the Danforth University Center's many green features is a 50,000-gallon water tank underneath the building that collects excess rainwater and groundwater to be used in irrigating the building's landscaping.


Brauers' generosity to support engineering for years to come

Oct. 20, 2008 -- Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton announced that WUSTL has received a major commitment from Stephen and Camilla Brauer to help implement the long-range, strategic plan of its School of Engineering & Applied Science.

School of Law installs canopy over courtyard

May 8, 2008 -- On May 5 and 6, 2008, construction crews raised a massive steel canopy structure up two stories over the School of Law's Anheuser-Busch Hall using the largest crane in Missouri.

Concordia Seminary and Washington University announce sale of former CBC High School property

Sept. 11, 2007 -- The former Christian Brothers College (CBC) High School property in the 6500 block of Clayton Road in Clayton has been sold to Washington University in St. Louis, it was jointly announced today by Concordia Seminary and the university. Concordia purchased the property in 2001 when the high school moved to its new location in Town & Country, Mo.


Forest Park Parkway closures

Pedestrian overpass to be completed by mid-October

Aug. 8, 2007 -- During Phase One construction, the pedestrian overpass will be closed from 7 p.m.-5 a.m. nightly, except Friday and Saturday evenings.


Grease fire in Millbrook Square apartments

Students unharmed

March 26, 2007 -- A grease fire broke out in an apartment kitchen in Millbrook Building Two on Saturday, March 24, forcing the evacuation of the building. The Clayton Fire Department coordinated the fire response, which included emergency crews and vehicles from six surrounding municipalities. Millbrook Two, which is part of the Millbrook Square Apartments located in the northwest corner of the Danforth Campus, houses 51 students. No students were injured, but some are still not able to return to their apartments and are being housed temporarily at the Knight Center on campus.

Aug. 25, 2006 -- The look of the Washington University Hilltop Campus is changing as it prepares to name the campus the "Danforth Campus" in recognition of the role that Chancellor Emeritus William H. "Bill" Danforth, the late Elizabeth "Ibby" Gray Danforth, the Danforth family and the Danforth Foundation have played in the evolution of Washington University in St. Louis.
