More than 1,500 journalists from across the globe traveled to the University to cover the Oct. 8 presidential debate between John Kerry and George Bush. The event generated thousands of news mentions for the university, including numerous live broadcasts from impromptu television studios assembled around campus. CNN hosted a debate watch party in Brookings Quadrangle, and aired Crossfire live from the Quad both the day before and the day of the debate; after the debate it went live again to deliver analysis. MSNBC's Chris Matthews went live with his show, Hardball With Chris Matthews, both the day before and the day of the debate, giving numerous students an opportunity to participate during the broadcasts. BBC reporters covered the WUSTL crowd watching the debate from Graham Chapel. Steven J. Givens, assistant to the chancellor and a point-person for debate planning, was a frequent news commentator on debate-related logistics. WUSTL faculty experts, such as James Davis and Wayne Fields, provided commentary for media outlets across the globe. WUSTL students also were quoted extensively in stories by visiting news media, and dozens of newspapers in students' hometowns ran features on their involvement in the debate.
