Safety Alert: Crib Bumpers Kids' Health When it comes to bumpers, firm is fine, right? Wrong, says a new analysis of injury data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The study reported that firm pads can suffocate an infant by trapping his head in the space between the bumper and the mattress. The study also found some bumpers on the market with ties longer than nine inches, which is a strangulation hazard. While bumpers do keep little limbs from getting stuck in slats, "they don't prevent any major injuries, and they're not worth the risk," says lead author Bradley Thach, M.D., of Washington University in St. Louis. ...
