Women who undergo breast reconstruction after cancer surgery are twice as likely to develop an infection

Women who undergo breast reconstruction after cancer surgery are twice as likely to develop an infection at the surgical site if they are given a prosthetic implant instead of their own tissue, say researchers at Washington University in St Louis. The study of 949 operations over three years in the Archives of Surgery (January) found that 12 percent of implant patients suffered subsequent infections.
