Background information on Harish A. Shah

School of Architecture alumnus (Master of Architecture, 1973) Harish Shah is vice president and principal of RMW Architecture + Design. Shah has three decades of varied, in-depth design and management experience. He joined RMW, an award-winning architectural and interior design firm based in San Francisco, in March 1982 and became a principal in 1986. His previous experience includes 13 years of architectural work in Chicago.

Among Shah's work is a collaborative project with Maki & Associates of Tokyo for the Yerba Buena Gardens Visual Arts Center in San Francisco. The project won a 1995 Honor Award for Design Excellence from the American Institute of Architects California Council and a 1994 Award of Honor for Interior Design from the AIA San Francisco Council.

RMW has extensive experience in architectural projects for academic institutions, art galleries and performing arts facilities, including Stanford University, University of California, California Academy of Sciences, Modernism Art Gallery in San Francisco, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Fort Mason Cultural Complex and Rancho Bernardo Performing Arts Center.

Specializing in rehabilitation and institutional work, Shah has been the project principal or manager for numerous projects, including Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco; San Jose Museum of Art; Goodwill Industries in San Francisco; Transamerica Realty Office Building in Stockton; the Foster City City Hall and Council Chambers; the Fox Theatre in San Jose; and the Bank of California Main Headquarters in San Francisco.
