Frequently asked questions about The Sam Fox Arts Center at Washington University in St. Louis

[St. Louis, MO., 12-07-02]

What is the Sam Fox Arts Center?

The Sam Fox Arts Center at Washington University is a campus-wide umbrella organization for the study and promotion of visual culture. The center combines the resources of three academic units -- the School of Architecture, the School of Art and the Department of Art History and Archaeology in Arts & Sciences -- with the University's nationally recognized Gallery of Art and Art & Architecture Library.

How will this project benefit the University?

Creation of the Sam Fox Arts Center will allow for greater collaboration between the member areas as well as development of new, interdisciplinary programs. In addition, it will allow School of Art students and faculty currently working at the Vernon Street Graduate Studios, Lewis Center in University City and the University's West Campus facility in Clayton to return to the Hilltop Campus.

What will the Sam Fox Arts Center encompass?

Five buildings: two new structures and three existing arts facilities. The three existing buildings are: Bixby Hall, home to the School of Art; Givens Hall, home to the School of Architecture; and Steinberg Hall, home to the Gallery of Art, Art & Architecture Library and Department of Art History & Archaeology. The new buildings are an approximately 65,000 square-foot art museum, which also incorporates new library and classroom space; and a second, approximately 38,000 square-foot building for the School of Art.

Where will the Sam Fox Arts Center be located?

At the southeastern end of Washington University's Hilltop Campus, near the intersection of Forsyth and Skinker boulevards. Bixby, Steinberg and Givens halls are located along Forsyth just west of Skinker. The Museum Building will be located just north of Steinberg, in what is now a parking lot. The new School of Art building will be located just north of Bixby.

Who are the architects?

Design architect is Fumihiko Maki, principal of Maki & Associates in Tokyo and the 1993 recipient of the Pritzker Prize, the profession's highest honor. Maki taught at the Washington University School of Architecture from 1956 to 1963, during which time he completed the original early-stage designs for Steinberg Hall, his first built building. Project architect is Harish Shah, a 1973 graduate of the University's School of Architecture and a principal of RMW Architects + Design of San Francisco. Maki and Shah previously collaborated on the Yerba Buena Gardens Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Maki's only completed building in the United States aside from Steinberg. The St. Louis firm Ottolino Winters Huebner oversaw renovations to Bixby and Givens.

When will construction begin?

The first phase of construction -- renovations to Bixby and Givens halls -- was completed earlier this year. Construction of the new buildings is scheduled to begin in March 2004, once sufficient additional funding has been secured. Renovations to Steinberg Hall will commence once new construction is completed.

What is the total cost for the project?

$56.8 million. Renovations to Bixby and Givens halls were approximately $16 million, with an additional $1.8 million allocated towards infrastructure improvements for the entire site. New construction, along with renovations to Steinberg Hall, is budgeted at approximately $39 million.
