Background information on Sam Fox

Sam
Fox, chairman, chief executive
officer and founder of Harbour
Group, Ltd., is a leader in St.
Louis business, philanthropic
and civic affairs and a steadfast
friend of Washington University.

Fox
has chaired Washington University's
$1.3 billion capital campaign
since its inception in 1998. He
has served as a member of the
University's Board of Trustees
since 1989, including a term as
vice chairman of the board from
1999-2001, and was elected an
emeritus trustee in 2001. In 1980,
he and his wife established the
Sam & Marilyn Fox Scholarship
through the Olin School's Scholars
in Business Program.
Fox serves or has served on the
boards of numerous St. Louis institutions,
including the Arts & Education
Council of Greater St. Louis,
Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Civic
Progress, The Muny opera in Forest
Park, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis,
the V.P. Fair Foundation, the
St. Louis Science Center and the
St. Louis Zoo. In addition, Fox
is chairman, and formerly president,
of the Greater St. Louis Area
Council of the Boy Scouts of America,
one of the strongest scouting
programs in the United States.
From 1997 to 2001, he served as
president of the Saint Louis Art
Museum's Board of Commissioners,
spearheading recruitment of director
Brent Benjamin and development
of a 10-year strategic plan, and
he continues to serve as vice
president.
Born and raised in Desloge, Mo.,
Fox moved to St. Louis in 1947
to attend Washington University,
where he was a was a member of
the Dean's Honor Roll and Beta
Gamma Sigma, a national honor
society in business administration.
In 1951, after graduating with
a bachelor's of science degree
in business administration, Fox
joined a brother in Fox Industries,
Inc., which made powders for the
chemical industry and also ran
an industrial park and warehousing
complex.
In 1976, Fox founded Harbour Group
Ltd., a privately owned operating
company that specializes in the
acquisition and development of
manufacturing companies for long-term
investment. Harbour Group's success
has been spectacular. Sales and
profitability have grown at more
than 25% compounded annually in
industries with growth rates of
less than 5%, including agricultural
equipment, medical products, cutting
tools, precision optics, molded
rubber, fluid handling, plastic
processing equipment, industrial
springs, automotive accessories
and many others. Today, Harbour
Group's subsidiaries and former
subsidiaries have more than 12,000
employees worldwide and annual
revenues in excess of $1.5 billion.
Fox's many honors include Washington
University's Distinguished Alumni
Award in 1986; the Olin School's
Distinguished Business Alumni
Award in 1988; and the Beta Gamma
Sigma Medallion for Entrepreneurship
in 1996. Earlier this year, Washington
University presented him with
an honorary doctorate of laws.
In addition, Fox was named the
St. Louis Variety Club's 2002
Man of the Year and, in 2001,
received the Missouri Historical
Society's Thomas Jefferson Award.
He received an honorary doctorate
of public service from Saint Louis
University in 2000; the Sigma
Alpha Mu Achievement Award and
the Missouri Republican Party
Spirit of Enterprise Award in
1998; the Clayton Chamber of Commerce
Business Person of the Year award
in 1996; the St. Louis Master
Entrepreneur of the Year award
in 1995; and the St. Louis
Business Journal's 1986 Enterprise
Award.
